MEMPHIS, September, 2007 – Philanthropy in many ways is a uniquely American custom; one that a group of au pairs from around the world is readily accepting as their own. The au pairs, together representing the countries of Peru, Brazil, Colombia, Germany, Russia, and Panama, are currently living with American families in Memphis, Germantown, and Collierville and Cordova as part of Cultural Care Au Pair’s intercultural childcare exchange program.
Cultural Care Au Pair’s Kids First initiative supports child advocacy groups and non-profit organizations benefiting children in need worldwide. It is Cultural Care’s hope that their Kids First campaign can bring cultures together and invest in the growth and development of children throughout the world. When Cultural Care Au Pair recently announced three new projects that Kids First will be helping to fund, local families and au pairs decided to roll up their sleeves and help out.
For the past few years, Kids First has supported an orphanage in Russia, buying the children computers, books, sports equipment and much more. In March Kids First purchased the orphanage’s biggest item on their wish list – a school bus. Kids First will continue to fund an annual cultural trip for the children at this orphanage, but local families and au pairs raised money for Kids First’s three new initiatives – Ubuhle Babantwana, an orphanage in South Africa; Casa do Zezinho, an arts center in Brazil; and St. Mary’s, a school in New Orleans that was devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
On September 15, Local Childcare Coordinator, Vicky Elkins, along with area au pairs and their host families, gathered for a Garage Sale in Memphis. The group sold everything from toys, and house wares to furniture and clothing with all sale proceeds benefiting Kids First. In total, the au pairs raised over $500.
“The au pairs in our area are not only here to care for American children but also to learn about and experience American culture. I felt it is incredibly important to demonstrate to these wonderful young people that philanthropy is part of our American culture,” said Elkins. “It was wonderful to see them come together with their host families to make a difference in the lives of children who have far less opportunity than themselves. I tell them that even the smallest act can make a big difference. It’s a life lesson I hope they take with them after their exchange year is over.”
As a local childcare coordinator for Cultural Care Au Pair, Elkins supports au pairs in the area, as well as their host families, ensuring that the entire family has a positive experience. The program, regulated by the U.S. Department of State, allows qualified young people with proven experience to live in the United States for one year providing childcare for local families, while taking college courses and experiencing American culture first hand.
