Cultural Care Aupair, Maria Magerl, from Germany got a Scholarship

Congratulation to Maria Magerl for her award of $1000 scholarship to be used for aviation education.
The Memphis Belles Chapter of Women in Aviation met on January 23 at the Pan Am Int’l Flight Academy in Memphis. There was a Scholarship presentation and a guest speaker, Mr. Gene Thomas (Ret. NASA), former NASA Shuttle Launch Director for six shuttles including the launch of Challenger. Fayette County resident Val Thal-Slocum is a member, was in attendance, and brought along future astronaut, Sydney Barnes.
At that meeting, Maria Magerl, Au Pair from Regensburg, Germany, living and working in Moscow, TN was awarded a $1000 scholarship to be used for aviation education. Maria plans to return to the US in the fall and attend Embry Riddle in Florida to obtain a degree in Aviation Maintenance.
The Memphis Belles chapter has awarded (3) scholarships this year totaling $3,000 to:
Fariah Peterson - Colleen Platt Walker Memorial Scholarship
Maria Magerl - Aviation Education Scholarship (on Left: Maria Magerl)
Caroline d’Otreppe - Conference Registration Scholarship
A special thanks to our guest speaker, Mr. Gene Thomas (Ret. NASA) and our special guests, the Olive Branch Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol.
Val Thal-Slocum is a pilot with FedEx and a member of the Bent Prop Project (http://www.bentprop.org/). The Bent Prop Project seeks information leading to downed aircraft from World War II in the Republic of Palau. Many American servicemen went MIA in the Palau region. The Bent Prop Project is a group of people dedicated to bringing closure to the stories of these downed servicemen.
